Send me a postcard
Here are two little works by Auckland artist Nick Austin. I discovered them on Thursday in my visit to Hopkinson Cundy one of the newer dealer galleries in town. They're quite charming, the little ball and the postage-stamp sized window, it's an accident waiting to happen. With a comic strip sense of timing I am left wondering if they make it through the goal posts. Austin works a lot painting on found materials, but here he is using ready made postcards by well-known art paper manufacturers Lana. The papers are created so that you can paint your own postcards, but Austin has gone and painted on the 'reverse' side, the writing side, inverting the whole idea. Will anyone have the balls to mail these works?
